Connecting People with Semporna's Waters
kelpsynas operates from Semporna Jetty, providing charter services that prioritize safety, local knowledge, and respectful engagement with the marine environment.
Return HomeOur Story
kelpsynas was established in January 2019 by a group of individuals with long-standing connections to Semporna's maritime community. The founders recognized a need for charter services that combined professional vessel operation with genuine local knowledge of the area's reef systems, currents, and marine life patterns.
The name "kelpsynas" references both the kelp forests found in cooler waters and the shoreline communities of Semporna, acknowledging that while this region lacks kelp, the principle of connecting aquatic ecosystems with coastal life remains central to our work. We operate in an area where the Bajau Laut people have navigated these waters for generations, and we aim to provide services that respect that heritage while meeting contemporary expectations for safety and information.
From the beginning, kelpsynas has focused on three charter formats: morning visits to Mabul Island for those with limited time, full-day explorations of the Tun Sakaran Marine Park, and multi-day passages around Sipadan for extended marine observation. Each format addresses different schedules and interests while maintaining consistent standards for vessel maintenance, crew training, and environmental consideration.
Our vessels range from a 30-foot speedboat suitable for quick transfers to a 44-foot live-aboard cruiser equipped for overnight stays. All boats undergo regular inspections, and crew members complete certifications in maritime safety, first aid, and marine ecology. We work with the Sabah Parks authority to ensure compliance with protected area regulations and permit requirements.
Over the past several years, kelpsynas has refined its approach based on feedback from guests and observations of changing conditions in the marine environment. We've adjusted departure times to account for optimal tide windows, modified snorkelling routes to reduce impact on sensitive coral formations, and expanded our pre-charter briefings to include more detailed information about responsible reef interaction.
The company remains small by design, operating a modest fleet that allows for direct oversight and personal attention to each charter. We're based at Semporna Jetty, where our office handles bookings, vessel scheduling, and coordination with marine park authorities. This centralized location facilitates communication and ensures that operational decisions account for current weather patterns, sea conditions, and any temporary closures or advisories.

Standards and Protocols
Vessel Maintenance
All boats undergo monthly inspections covering hull integrity, engine function, safety equipment, and navigation systems. Service records are maintained and available for review. Vessels are retired from the fleet when they no longer meet operational standards.
Safety Certifications
All crew members complete training in maritime safety, first aid, and emergency procedures. Life jackets, communication devices, and first aid kits are standard on every charter. Weather assessments are conducted before each departure.
Environmental Practices
We follow marine park guidelines for anchoring, wildlife observation distances, and reef approach protocols. Snorkelling briefings emphasize non-contact interaction with marine life. Waste management procedures are implemented on all charters.
Regulatory Compliance
kelpsynas operates under permits issued by Sabah Parks and maintains current registration with Malaysian maritime authorities. We coordinate with relevant agencies regarding Sipadan permits and marine park entry requirements.
Approach and Expertise
Operating charter services in the waters around Semporna requires understanding of reef topography, current patterns, seasonal weather variations, and protected area regulations. kelpsynas's approach combines this technical knowledge with practical experience gained through daily operations in these specific locations.
The region's coral reef systems support diverse marine life, including pelagic species that frequent the Sipadan drop-off wall and smaller reef fish common around Mabul's sandy-bottom sites. Our marine guides receive ongoing training in species identification and ecosystem dynamics, allowing them to provide accurate information during reef encounters. This education component aims to enhance guest appreciation while reinforcing responsible observation practices.
Weather and sea conditions vary throughout the year, with the southwest monsoon typically affecting operations from May through September. kelpsynas monitors forecasts closely and maintains communication with other operators regarding current conditions. The decision to proceed with or postpone a charter rests with the boat captain, who assesses factors including wind speed, wave height, visibility, and projected changes over the charter duration.
Charter routes are planned to account for guest fitness levels, snorkelling experience, and specific interests. For the Sipadan passage charter, reef selection balances opportunities for pelagic sightings with accessibility for less experienced snorkellers. The marine guide adjusts the itinerary based on conditions encountered and guest feedback gathered during the first day.
kelpsynas works within the framework established by Sabah Parks for the Tun Sakaran Marine Park and Sipadan Island. This includes adhering to designated snorkelling zones, daily visitor limits, and permit allocation systems. We handle the administrative requirements for park entry and Sipadan permits, ensuring compliance with current regulations.
The company's modest scale allows for direct communication between office staff, crew members, and guests. Pre-charter consultations address questions about vessel specifications, activity levels, dietary needs, and itinerary details. This exchange helps align expectations with what each charter format realistically provides given time constraints, weather considerations, and marine park parameters.
